Pearls are fascinating gems formed inside the shells of certain molluscs, such as oysters. The process begins when an irritant, often a grain of sand or a tiny organism, gets inside the mollusc's shell. To protect itself, the mollusc secretes layers of nacre, a smooth crystalline substance, around the irritant. Over time, these layers build up to form a pearl.
